Trying To Capture The Spirit Of Christmas In A Song

I got asked about a week ago by my label to write a Christmas song, that I was to record 5 days later. Anyone who knows how I write my songs will probably chuckle thinking that should be easy for her but this was a bit of a challenge. I have never written a Christmas song before and instantly I started to freak a little thinking, "Ok no problem, I mean there is like only the most MAJOR competition out there when it comes to Christmas songs, sure I can do this eeeeeeks!".

I also had to remember to write the song around Christmas in the Northern Hemisphere and not where I come from i.e. Australia where it is summer, meaning typically HOT and our upbringing is of Santa in sunglasses, shorts, flip-flops, a crew of a mix of reindeer all sharing surfboards with the odd kangaroo and koala. Would you all believe a lot of us still have traditional HOT roast turkey dinner on the day to with all the trimmings! We all of course head for the beach or any cool body of water after wards.

I came up with a few ideas at first which all ended up in crumpled balls of "recycled" paper on the floor as I realized they were no good. I really started to think I was a bit way out of my depth but then my producer sent me the music and I almost spontaneously became saturated by the Christmas spirit, the inspiration seemed to pour, it was an awesome feeling!

However, as I began writing and being completely fueled by the Christmas spirit, my heart seemed to start aching, which at first I thought was weird?!?!?

Then I realized the ache was coming from the thought of those that are just not able to celebrate Christmas because of extreme poverty, being away from their loved ones or just feeling alone. My heart just seemed to burst with sadness and so I just felt compelled to want to help those that are also feeling and living this way to also be able to share in the joy of Christmas. I felt there were 2 missions to this song;

1. To fill hearts so FULL of the Christmas spirit which to me is an extraordinary mix of joy, excitement, hope, peace and love

so that in return we are;

2. So filled to overflowing with the Christmas spirit that we just want to be givers and experience that extraordianry sense of joy we get from giving, and how often the most powerful gift that has and always will be is not expensive gifts but a simple heartfelt smile,a hug, kind words, an invitation to Christmas dinner, a gift of food, a blanket, and the list goes on at the littlest, simplest things we can give and do that can make ALL the difference to lift someone up.

So that's the song..."The Gift of Love"

I pray it will fill you with the Spirit of Christmas early this year and will help to inspire you to help out a few more less fortunate so we all can be filled to overflowing with the Spirit of Christmas this year !
